AI,
Sensemaking,
& Decision‑Making
in Crisis Contexts

This one-day workshop examines how AI participates in crisis-related sensemaking and decision-making, and considers the implications for designing interactive systems in high-stakes contexts.

Why This Matters Now

Around the world, communities and institutions face a growing range of crises, from climate-related events and public health emergencies to geopolitical instability.

AI is already being deployed in crisis contexts around the world, from wildfire forecasting to humanitarian response. Yet its role in shaping how people interpret situations, communicate risk, and make decisions remains underexamined. This workshop brings a design lens to that gap.

Important Info

Workshop
WS15 · Sunday 14 June 2026
Location
UTown, National University of Singapore · Room TBA
EOI Deadline
6 June 2025 (acceptance on a rolling basis)

Expression of Interest

We welcome researchers and practitioners working at the intersection of AI, crisis contexts, and design.

To register your interest, complete the short EOI form below. EOIs are assessed on a rolling basis and close on 6 June 2025 or once capacity is reached. We encourage early submission.

Accepted participants will give a 1-slide, 5-minute presentation at the start of the workshop. Activities are designed around participants' position statements, personalising discussions, supporting networking, and drawing on the diverse experiences everyone brings.

Tentative Schedule

Morning
Welcome & Introductions
Keynote
Speaker to be announced mid-May.
1-Slide Presentations
Each participant gives a 5-minute, 1-slide introduction of their work and positionality.
Morning Tea
Activity 1 — What is AI in Crisis?
Exploring AI applications in crisis contexts: is it informing or in control? How do people understand and act on AI-supported crisis information?
Midday
Lunch
Afternoon
Activity 2 — Speculative Design
Working through crisis scenarios grounded in workshop themes, imagining futures where AI plays an expanded role. What happens when AI takes over? What should we design for?
Afternoon Tea
Group Presentations
Groups share outcomes and provocations from the afternoon activity.
Wrap Up & Next Steps
Synthesis, future collaborations, and closing remarks.

Anticipated Outcomes

01 /

Mapping how AI currently enters crisis sensemaking, examining its applications, its role in shaping interpretation, and how different actors understand and use AI-supported information.

02 /

Speculating on futures of AI in crisis contexts by working through crisis scenarios to interrogate design possibilities, risks, and responsibilities when AI plays an expanded role.

03 /

Creating a basis for future publications and collaborations, including joint papers, panels, or follow-up workshops.
